BYD, China’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has unveiled groundbreaking fast-charging technology capable of fully charging electric vehicles (EVs) within just five minutes, significantly outperforming Tesla’s fastest offerings.

The revolutionary system, called the “Super e-Platform,” provides charging speeds of up to 1,000 kW—twice that of Tesla’s current Superchargers, dramatically reducing typical charging times from 30 minutes or more to as little as five to eight minutes.

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu emphasised that this technology effectively tackles the widespread “charging anxiety” experienced by EV owners. Demonstrations with BYD’s Han L sedan highlighted the remarkable potential, delivering a 292-mile range after just five minutes of charging, closely matching the refuelling convenience of petrol vehicles.

New Chinese innovation sets unprecedented EV charging speeds

The innovation is particularly crucial as electric vehicle adoption grows and drivers increasingly face “charge rage”—the frustration stemming from extended waits at charging stations. BYD’s solution aims not only to alleviate this tension but also to encourage faster and wider global adoption of electric vehicles.

The new ultra-fast charging system debuts in BYD’s premium models, the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV, priced competitively at about £28,700.

BYD’s latest technological advancement further amplifies the competition with Tesla. The Chinese manufacturer has already edged past Tesla in global EV production and recently recorded higher sales growth in key markets, including the UK.

Analysts have praised BYD’s innovation as a major leap forward, placing significant pressure on Tesla to accelerate its own technological improvements.

Initially, BYD plans to roll out more than 4,000 charging stations equipped with the new technology in China, setting the stage for a potential global expansion.

As electric vehicles continue to evolve rapidly, BYD’s ultra-fast charging technology represents a critical milestone, making electric cars more accessible, convenient, and practical for drivers worldwide.
