Tesla has unveiled the Model Y, adding to its uber stylish line-up of all-electric vehicles and completing the S-3-X-Y range with the new Model Y sitting alongside the existing models – Model S, Model 3 and Model X.

The Model Y – designed to be the safest mid-size SUV, slots in tidily between the Model 3 and Model X blending the practicality of a large family sized hatchback with the versatility, styling and ride height of a Sports Utility Vehicle.

A sort of mash-up between the Model 3 and Model X, it stands taller and around 10% larger than the Model 3 which it closely resembles, sharing a lot of the Model 3’s design features and elements. The sloping roof line, 0.23 drag coefficient and low centre of gravity give the Model Y sports like looks and characteristics, allowing it to be responsive and agile on the road much like a sports car.

Inside, Model Y’s panoramic glass roof and high seating creates a feeling of spaciousness and offers an expansive view from every seat in the vehicle. The Model Y will also be available in seven-seat configuration allowing you to bring family and friends along for the ride.

“bringing sexy back”

The Model Y will be made available in 4 variants, with the standard model which will do 230 miles on a full charge setting you back around £35,000 – £40,000 when it arrives in Spring 2021. This is a steal compared to its nearest rival the recently announced Polestar 2 which will cost around £20,000 more. Other rivals in the segment will be the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Jaguar’s I-Pace which is currently available for a staggering £65,000 before you even started “pimping your ride”.

The first 3 models in the line-up that will initially become available for delivery in Fall 2020 will be the Long Range (300 miles), Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive and the Performance which will do a 0-60 sprint in 3.5 seconds.

The Model Y will be compatible with Tesla’s current Supercharger network of more than 12,000 Superchargers in 36 countries, as well as the new V3 Superchargers which can charge at rates up to 1,000 miles per hour which would give the Long Range variant a full charge in under 20 minutes.

The Model Y is sure to be a hot seller especially with business buyers, with Tesla likely to soon be opening the UK pre-order floodgates at the notional £1,000 to secure a build slot.
