FAQ’s
-
When will KG26 Y number plates be available?
26 series number plates are expected to be introduced in the UK in the first half of 2026 for new vehicle registrations, typically starting from 1st March. However, a selection of these registrations are usually made available to purchase a few months prior to the official usage start date.
While you can secure your desired 26 reg plate ahead of time, it's important to note that you won't be able to assign it to a vehicle registered before the specified start date.
If you'd like to get your hands on a specific 26 reg plate as soon they're available, it's advised to check with the DVLA or our private reg team to confirm release date and availability.

Can I choose my number plate when buying a new car?
When you buy a new vehicle, it will usually come with a standard year identifying registration assigned by the DVLA. This registration not only provides a unique identity to your vehicle but also indicates the local DVLA office where the number plate was issued, as reflected by the first two letters of the registration. For example, a current style registration starting with "KG" indicates the vehicle was registered in the Luton, Borehamwood (formerly Luton) area.
If you want a specific or personalised number plate, you can buy a private registration. Once purchased, you'll need to assign it to your vehicle through the DVLA, ensuring all the necessary paperwork and criteria are met.
-
Can I assign a 26 reg to my car?
26 series number plates, when introduced in 2026, will be designated for new vehicles registered between 1st March 2026 and 31st August 2026. If you wish to use a 26 reg on a vehicle, it's essential to ensure the vehicle was first registered on or after the 26 series introduction date. In the UK, you cannot use a registration mark that makes a vehicle appear newer than it is.
-
Can I transfer my current number plate to a new car?
Yes, you can transfer your current number plate to a new car as long as both vehicles meet the DVLA's criteria for transfer. The process involves retaining your existing number plate, applying to the DVLA and ensuring both vehicles are currently taxed or declared SORN (with some exceptions) and have a current MOT. Check car tax and MOT history.
-
How long does it take to assign a private number plate to my vehicle?
Once you have all the necessary documents and have made the application, the DVLA typically takes around 10-15 working days to process and approve the assignment of a private number plate. However, this can vary depending on the workload of the DVLA at any given time.
For a quicker and more convenient process, the DVLA offers an online transfer service available from 7am to 7pm daily. This online service allows for an instant transfer of private number plates, making it an attractive option for those who prefer a more immediate confirmation.
