Replacing the BMW 6 Series as the flagship luxury open top experience, the second model in the new BMW 8 Series line-up is here. The BMW 8 Series Convertible, combining dynamic flair and serene long-distance ability with a sumptuous open-top driving experience.
A fully electric and quiet classical soft-top roof provides open-air driving pleasure in only 15 seconds at the touch of a button at speeds of up to 31 mph. The soft top canvas roof is available in Black as standard or Anthracite Silver effect as an option, minimises weight and provides outstanding acoustic comfort.
With a wide sporty rear-end, low-slung stance and elegantly flowing lines, the styling of the 8 Series convertible is emotionally rich and in keeping with the new BMW design language.
The exterior and interior design work together harmoniously with gently rising shoulderline; surrounds for the side windows and soft-top lid merge elegantly with grace, with the front and rear seats embraced in a flowing movement. Sophisticated design for soft-top compartment with subtle domes and surfacing that takes its cues from the instrument panel and door shoulders.
Two variants will be available from launch in March 2019, just in time for some summer time fun; the V8 BMW M850i xDrive Convertible and
the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible.

Both engine variants meet Euro 6d-TEMP exhaust standard. Power transfer by eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

Developed alongside the BMW 8 Series Coupe, BMW M8 and BMW M8 GTE endurance racer. The BMW 8 Series Convertible delivers a truly unadulterated sports car character thanks to its low centre of gravity, even weight distribution, extremely stiff almost list-free aerodynamically optimised body engineered to a lighweight construction using aluminium, magnesium and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) all sitting on a chassis structure with Convertible-specific underbody bracing. Special occupant protection measures include strengthened windscreen frame and rollover bars behind the rear seats that extend by pyrotechnic charge.
Adaptive M suspension, Integral Active Steering and mixed-size tyres are all available as standard. M Sport differential (with electronically controlled differential lock) fitted as standard at the rear axle of the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible and available as an option for the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible with active roll stabilisation optional for the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible.
Adaptive LED headlights and LED rear lights will be available as standard on both models with BMW Laserlight with Selective Beam and high beam range increased to 600 metres available as an optional extra.
M Sport package for the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible with specific design and equipment features: front apron with extra-large air intakes, distinctive side skirt and rear apron design, 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, M Sport braking system, multifunction seats, M leather steering wheel and illuminated door sills with M logo. BMW M850i xDrive Convertible also has a front spoiler extension, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels and high performance tyres, specific M Sport braking system, exclusive exterior elements in Cerium Grey, interior trim strips in stainless steel mesh design and illuminated door sills with model badge. M Technic Sport Package available for the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible.
Pop-up wind deflector in the rear are fitted as standard, however neck warmers intergrated into the headrests which are an essential extra for our cooler British summers are an optional extra.
Electrically adjustable sports seats with memory function and Vernasca leather trim are standard in the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible with the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible getting a slightly more premium treatment with multifunction Merino leather seats with extended features.
The boot capacity is a respectable 350 litres with 50:50 split folding rear seats allowing you to carry longer items of luggage. Automatic boot lid operation and Comfort Access including hands-free opening and closing of the boot lid for when you have your hands full, all come as standard.
Luxury tech features include telephony with wireless charging, BMW Display Key with remote control parking, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, Heat Comfort package, active seat ventilation, Automatic Soft Close function for the doors, glass applications for selected controls.
Although an interesting conversational piece, the BMW Display Key with its hefty size and at times unresponsive touchscreen lacks practicality which has left it banished to the back of a drawer or cupboard for some owners. BMW following Mercedes’ lead, now includes the BMW Digital Key which will enable car access and engine start-up via an app installed on your smartphone. A slightly more practical application that won’t put an extra bulge in your skinny jeans, unless that’s the look you’re going for of course.
Latest Generation of the BMW Head-Up Display and BMW Live Cockpit Professional including navigation system, fully digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touch enabled Control Display (with identical modern graphics) powered by the new BMW Operating System 7.0 will also be available as standard.
For the business user, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with Digital co-driver and vehicle expert is controlled by natural voice commands and has Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business integrated.
